Frak...

I'm an idiot and pulled the wrong harness... LKQ (the local boneyard) has only one 740 currently and its not the right one, so be on the lookout for a new "wanted" thread coming up.

Well, I may not have done the EZK swap as I'd hoped, but I did get something accomplished:

Those look great...I just ordered the main cluster ones from Dave (after years and years of making them myself), I might have to place another order!

Getting started on installing the VDO gauges:

Looks much better then the O'Reilly's gauges (I actually really liked the O'Reilly's gauges but over time they've lost their luster with me):

And I found out that my Android fits nicely in the cubby under the gauges. Spent my lunch break watching Top Gear. I wish this tablet had navigation but its just a cheapy (still fun to have, though):

RE: голубой вагон (Blue Wagon) 1986 245GL
Its official - I HATE Jegs racing.

They left me hanging for four months on a "backordered" part - the Grant 6583 hub adapter. ETA after ETA gets passed with no notice - I had to call them every time. I finally got hold of Grant who claims that the part is NOT "backordered" - its discontinued - and furthermore, they claim that Jegs has KNOWN this!!!!!!!!!! Yet Jegs has been telling me to wait for FOUR FRICKIN' MONTHS! Had I known at the beginning, I could have sourced the part used, but of course since its been four months all the used stuff has long since sold...

Grant blames Jegs for not keeping me informed, Jegs blames Grant for not keeping THEM informed (they claim they did not know) but here I am in the middle, waiting patiently for 4 months, getting screwed...

And yes, you read that right, according to Grant themselves, the Grant hub adapter part # 6583 will no longer be manufactured. (Well, they said they're in a meeting today to discuss it, but it looks very unlikely that they will continue to produce it.)

Its all taken care of now though. I just paid out twice as much for a momo adapter + grant-to-momo ring.

Problems and solutions...

So I start to install those VW VDO gauges I got. I remembered to pull the pigtails out of the donor car so I figured I was golden.

Problem #1 - it turns out the gauge bulbs were burned out. No problem, really, I just happen to have some #74 LEDs from superbrightled I'll throw in there...

Problem #2 - They're those stupid soldered-in non-replaceable bulbs:

Great... Now what? I scour the interwebs only to find that I'm not the only person to run into this problem, however no solution has been found (or at least posted). VDO's own website doesn't even have proper bulb sockets for these gauges anymore. (It appears their current run of "Cockpit" gauges uses a different bulb and holder design entirely.)
So again... now what?

Well, I still have the 194 sockets from my Equus gauges.

Problem #3: Will they fit?

No, doesn't look like it:

Solution: Make it fit!

First, ya gotta have the right tool for the right job, right? Well a step bit would be great for this...

Where's my step bit?
Where's my step bit?!
Ahh screw it!

Looks like it just might fit... Will it?

It FITS!

And it works!

Now before anyone lectures me on the heat from a 194 being too much etc etc, I've got 194-sized LEDs on their way, should be in tomorrow, (which should also turn that yellow illumination to a cool white) so no worries.

Nice solution to a crappy problem. Those stupid soldered in bulbs are lame. The Volvo version the bulbs are replaceable so you could have also used some Volvo sockets. I am referring to the accessory gauges like in a 240 turbo. Those use the same bulb holder with a replaceable bulb.

1982 242 turbo. MVP coilover front and rear suspension. Bilstein HD. IPD 25/25 bars. 3" MVP exhaust. Cosworth Sierra hot side T3 .48 with upgraded stock .42 compressor. Ported 90+.True Track diff. Flat hood, 1979 front grill, 2 screw Hella Ecode park/turn lights with H4 Hella headlights. 321k miles.

1993 Classic Edition wagon 5spd 341k miles.

Dear okflyboy77,

Very Sorry. There was an error in inventory and the hub adapter you ordered is currently out of stock. We have more coming from MOMO, but they will not be available to ship until around March 26th... Are you ok with the delay, or would you like us to cancel the order and provide a refund?

RE: голубой вагон (Blue Wagon) 1986 245GL
Did manage to get some more accomplished today.

First, I got my IPD belly pan mounted:

Next I'll be going for dual exhaust, so I purchased a Dynomax "Camaro" style muffler - 3" inlet straight-through design with dual 2.5" outlets, a 4' straight section of 3" pipe, a few 3" mandrel bends and some clamps and went to work.

Here's a mockup on the floor with the stock exhaust as a loose guide:

And finally this is what I ended up with after holding the muffler in place temporarily to get the exhaust to snake under the axle properly following the stock's route:

Of note - the "90 degree" bends purchased from O'Reilly's (the "tailpipes") are NOT 90 degrees, more like 80 degrees - They're getting returned for some true 90s! Also the last 45 mandrel tube (top of pic) is not pointed straight due to the way I had to move things to get it around the axle, not sure what to do about that yet but thinking about adding a flex-coupler between it and the 4' straight section to get it back on track...

RE: голубой вагон (Blue Wagon) 1986 245GL
It was a very stressful weekend.

I got the muffler and pipe mounted but its kinda sketchy right now. Since I can't weld I used clamps, but I had to use WAY too many of them (something like 13 all told) and it looks horrible. Also it now drones something fierce at 65-70mph (Which just happens to be where I spend about 80% of my total drive time). The 80 degree outlets look horrible in part because their supposed to be 90 degrees and in part because of the stupid crush bends. I can't say I like it as it stands right now. However, all is not yet lost. I will be taking it to the muffler shop tomorrow to get them to weld it all together and remove the clamps. Gabe is giving me a 3" resonator to help cut down on the droning and I guess I will be sourcing some 2 1/2" 90 degree mandrel-bends for my outlets.

No pics right now, but will add some shortly.

EZK Conversion is now finished! Beer Cheer However I ran into a problem. Basically it runs fine on the NA computer but won't run on the Turbo computer. I started a new thread about it.

Thanks to the fine folks who responded to my other thread we found the culprit - I had overlooked the difference in NA vs Turbo injectors. Swapped in some orange-top injectors, put the Turbo ECU back in and she purrs like a kitten!

Pictures as promised. When it gets to the exhaust remember, I'm not satisfied with it yet myself, so please don't be too critical.

Here's the engine bay after the EZK Conversion, kinda hard to see but there's an extra wire loom in there:

After seeing the aftermath of a friend's car burned to the ground for nothing but the lack of an extinguisher I decided I wanted/needed one myself:

Here's the exhaust as it stands right now. The clamps are just temporary until I get everything where I like it, then it will come down to be welded. Also, I know it needs to come back up after going under the axle, I've got the parts on the way to do so:

And finally here's the outlets with no tips and still the not-90 degree bends from O'Reilly's (yes, I know its a little lopsided):

Doesn't ANYONE keep accurate inventory anymore?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Any business that takes itself seriously should use RFID and a centralized database to keep track of inventory flows. Then again, they are probably too small to afford something like that.

Agreed but I don't think they actually ever had the hub. Likely they're drop shipping directly from MOMO USA and just assumed MOMO had them ready to go. At any rate they're not the only ones that are out. I cancelled that order, placed a new order from the next-cheapest ebay merchant and what-do-ya-know, two days later I get almost the exact same "very sorry - backordered" email. This guy at least admitted to drop shipping but defended himself by quipping "Its not against ebay rules to drop ship". I know its not against the rules, that doesn't mean its exactly an honest way of doing business when your auction says "6 Available" when really there's none.

Slow progress, but progress.

The exhaust comes down and gets welded. Plus - I learn to weld:

Thanks to Gabe I now have the correct adapters to install my 5 bar oil pressure sender:

I also installed my remote filter (yes, I know there's no clamps on those hoses) and used an off-the-shelf coolant tank to create a smaller washer bottle:

I ran out of time for today so she's staying up on jack stands until I can get back to her on Wednesday. More pics then, hopefully.
