Volvo 850 info display - help
Hi BS

I recently bought a nice 850 2.5 T5 LPT. As always with old cars it has
a few issues i would like to solve, one being the INFO display not showing
anything. The segments lights briefly when the ignition is turned on (lamp
test), then only the clock shows. I have the knob thats used to control
the info display, and its connected.

Any suggestions ?

Also the cluster is missing the boost gauge, is this always absent on a
LPT 850 ?

You said lots of cigar smoke in there... maybe check/clean the connectors on the two plugs on the back of it? Unlikely I know...

Re. boost gauge... if it's the LPT does that mean it's a '97?

I am guessing the cluster got swapped and they maybe didn't hook everything back up. Being a t5 it should have a boost gauge. However the t5 wasn't an lpt. Engine code? 5234 or 5254?

Its a 96.

Engine code is B5254T 193HP, first part of the VIN is: YV1LW5666
meaning engine code 56.

EDIT:
Found this somewhere: 2.5 LPT: bore 83 stroke 93.2 comp. 9:1 Mitsubishi 13G
Think the EU LPT might be the same as an US GLT Icon_scratch

GS: We got some stuff you guys never saw, like the LPT 'Polar' version of the 940...

Wolf: Results mixed, look at what's going around here... some have, some do not.

T5 vs. LPT though should be the same anywhere. Definitely not a T5 with that engine code.

Dunno on the boost gauge, definitely odd.

RE: Volvo 850 info display - help
More research reveals its actually called a 850T or 2.5T LPT.

I am a FWD noob and have never cared for WWD... But it runs
very nice and pulls hard from the bottom, very flat torque curve.
Makes it a wonderful daily driver, very rarely down shifts when
on cruse control, but if you mash the right pedal it downshifts
2 gears and instantly pulls like a na smallblock V8 Smile

It does not explode like a T5R does when it spools, its all together
a very different beast.

Its going to get a boost gauge soon regardless of it being stock Wink

The Volvo girls have R clusters complete with computer for 570 DKK if you can't find one:

From a 1996.

Thanks for the link Smile

I will dig around at the wrecker Monday, if i come up empty that
link could be handy. But i have to pay shipping +35% import tax
of both item value AND shipping (Danish tax mafia)

Another cluster is definitely high on the list as both the INFO comp.
and the odometer is dead.

RE: Volvo 850 info display - help
Went on a shopping spree: 2x clusters 1 with working info, 1 with new odometer.
Also got a intercooler with hoses and pipes for almost 3 cars, an amm, airbox with
"Turbo" stamped on it and new filter, a set of original carpets (the removable ones),
Traction control switch (still need the abs/tract computer) + some other stuff.

Hope this solves the problem Big Grin

Amazing ? not so much - We dont just go sourcing Getrag boxes in our scrapyards Wink

I bought the stuff privately, the guy breaks up 850's for parts.

So i finally got my info display working, and replaced the odometer gears, but the odo
is still not working grrr Guess the stepper driver in the cluster is bad Sad well i will have
another go at it tomorrow.

RE: Volvo 850 info display - help
It seems the info display is enabled/disabled depending on a bitmask
in the clusters eeprom. The inoperative info display works in another
cluster so the display itself is not bad as i first suspected.

If i find the correct bit to alter i will post a follow up here. But as of
now i got it all working, including the infamous odometer so this is
not a priority anymore.

Thanks for your inputs.

I saw a bunch of 850 odometer gears on the auctions here, guess they suffer the same fate as the 240s...

RE: Volvo 850 info display - help
Yeah, definitely the same issue as the 240's. Funny, they got it right on the 7/9's though.

At least on these it's only 1 cheap little gear. My Dodge has a dead odo a well. There's a smaller gear than Volvo uses, attached to a backing plate, both crack, only online source I've found is $25 for each part! The gear is 1/4" around at best. Really guys? Come on now...

Interesting about the cluster needing to be programmed for the info center. Haven't heard of that in the past, but I'm curious to see what you find!
