righty-o... i'm dan. been on turbobricks for 6 or so years. met a few of yinz in person.

i've got a '72 142e. guess i've had it for a few years or so.
when i dragged it home, i hosed it out with some bleach and chased the mildew and wasps away.

pushed it up the driveway and slowly went to work. a couple months later, this came out of the garage...

delrin and nylon bushes in the front, new/NOS OEM from Volvo bushes in the rear, bilstein HDs f/r, 500lb/in front springs, big ass front anti-sway.
All rebuilt brakes and steering, Hawk pads (i think they were hawk at the time).

$25 audi 4kq seats, a bit of rust removal and some rustoleum... the interior was good enough.

i rocked it like this, making the occasional tweak to the suspension, for a while.
It got a milled head, isky then later KG Trimning cam, otherwise pretty stock.

it straight ruled when we got the rad snow "storm" a couple years ago, with Nokian Hakka 1s... f'ing blast of a car.

then the D-Jet computer up and died.
became disinterested in the car, so it sat for a year and a half.

one day, when i got sick of squeezing motorcycles past it to get in/out of the garage or up/down my narrow driveway, i decided to either fix it or part it out.
my daughter, who's in a pic above, seriously digs the car... she literally begged me to not sell it.
so... a fixin' i was to go.

had a Holset HE351cw sitting in my basement. a bit of creative clearancing, and it'll do...

whip up a savar turbo style manifold/adapter...

a 4" downpipe...

aaaand... D-Jet is toast, so megasquirt it is.
MS1 v3, extra high-res 10g, COP, 1000cc injectors, 36-1 on dale's lower pulley, bla, bla, bla...

36-1 and VR adapter (VR is going in the trash, more on that later)

bit o' ceramic coating that likely won't last, and some heat wrap for ricer points

the 4" downpipe tapers to 3" by the trans... 3" flex, 3" to the tail... no muffler...

car sits kinda low-ish, and no way would a 3" fit under the car... so out comes the sawz-all and some 16ga... zap 'er in with the mig and bob's yer uncle...

i'm a bit scattered, and have me a touch of the ADD... so i tend to bounce around a lot.
oil filter no longer fits with the turbo/exhaust, so had to move it...

more to come in a minute...

RE: 142... b20, holset, megasquirt (lotsa pics)
right... more then.

squeezing 10lbs of sheeet in a 5lb bag is tough...

i'd say it's a chinabay IC... but it said "made in Mexico" on it... mexicobay? rad...

scirocco radiator (stock one didn't fit anymore)... oddly, it's made in mexico as well.

somewhere in there i dropped swapped motors...

this one has an E head and an F cam, 8.7:1...

'bar all welded in, and a restored headliner...

more coming.

it'll currently start/idle/run... kinda. loses VR signal and resets like f'ing crazy around 2k rpm.
i'm throwing the VR away, and going with a crank tooth sensor.

haven't tried it yet. the hall sensor from DIY Autotune is supposed to be here tomorrow. i'm going to take the VR out, smash the shit out of it office space style... then make a new mount for the hall and give it a go.

i talked to the guys about the hall sensor. they said it works from 1mm to 2.5mm clearance... doesn't seem to make a difference. shielded or un-shielded, doesn't seem to make a difference. not susceptible to noise.
i like that.

RE: 142... b20, holset, megasquirt (lotsa pics)
got the new hall sensor from DIY Autotune today...

cut up a piece of aluminum to hold it, in the place that was occupied by the piece of shit VR sensor.
(this is before filing/smoothing, but you get the idea)

now i gotta figure out / try to remember how to do a 5v pullup for this thing Smile

i also replaced the solid motor/trans mounts with diesel mounts.
the solid mounts were f'ing wild. at idle, it vibrated more than my harley at full boogie.

powtland... i'm in the hawthorne neighborhood

it should scoot along fine... but don't think it's going to be as fast as i want it to be for a while. the M40 will probably break, anyway.

i've got a 2nd motor for it... late 8 bolt b20. M rods. KG Trimning turbo cam. gonna try for ~8.2:1, E85 and 1.2 imperial shittons of boost on that motor, along with a very ported/large valve head.
it'll need a better trans, though...

Dan, if you get it reliable enough to make a roadtrip by February, bring it up to the XXX meet. If not, I'll probably see it @ iPd...

Pretty kickass project...

aye... real bullet holes.
previous owner hit the pass door with a .38...
there were a couple .22 holes in the back...
i've taken a .357 to it in anger before...

the car has caused some frustration over the years Smile

i've got the MS box ready to go back in the car and try firing it up. the rain and lack of coffee are hindering my ambition, though.
my garage/workshop is a carriage house built in 1913... in other words, it's not huge. i've got a couple motorcycle projects and the better part of a model A in there, a couple engines and metalworking shit. getting the volvo in there is like a fuggin shuffle puzzle... so it's workspace is under an ez-up in my driveway. no shelter from the rain + me being a huge puss when it comes to drizzle...

this is after ditching the VR, the complete VR circuit (JBPerf dual VR board 2.0), all new (again) sensor wires... using the on-board MS opto/hall circuit & a new hall sensor.

no joy here... i love carburetors...

Digging the exterior. This is going to be an awesome sleeper.

Also, hate to tell you this, but if the VR sensor isn't working, that means you're doing it wrong.

got any suggestions there karl? I told him to chuck the trigger wheel up in his drill and see if it still does it on the bench with the stim powering the sensor and ms.

early this morning i pulled the 36-1 wheel off, chucked it up and spun it. it false triggers.
i can duplicate it on the jimstim.

somethings wrong in the box... think i've been chasing the wrong problems.

man the wave looks real good though, just an incorrect number of gaps. wonder if this is a ms1 wheel decoder issue? you gotta ms2 chip you can borrow to test?

i was thinking maybe something like that...
then i was able to do this on the jimstim:

somethings weird. i'm going through the MS box, following the msextra assembly guide, to see if the dude who put this together f'ed up... and checking against bad soldering, etc.
unfortunately i'm the dude who put this together... nobody to get pissed at but myself Smile

Are you piggybacking any new outputs on the DB37 or is everything coming out with a new connector?

ignition comes out a new connector... don't trust the DB37 for much.

Maybe I missed this, but are you running a throttle position sensor? If you are, trying unplugging it and turning on map dot.

yup- running a TPS

since i can duplicate false triggers on the stim now, i've been focusing on the MS board itself. something must be wrong with it...

for S&G's you could try reloading the firmware. Doubt that will cure it, but it's certainly quick and easy. after that I'd go around and re-touch as many of the solder joints as you can & make sure there's not some that are bridged. I'm troubleshooting a v2.2 board right now that pulls power to ground as soon as you connect the 5v converter, and nothing obvious is wrong with it.
