the muthafucker runs.

20 minutes to swap the coils (zip tied FTW)... turn key, starts up and is immediately a million times better than before. went for a drive around the neighborhood, babying it still... and holy shit it runs better than anytime in the past year? maybe more...

pretty stoked.
now the tuning can actually begin Smile

rockin' it ghetto style...

i had the steering wheel off. it fell off my work bench... the plastic SHATTERED, sending shards of sharp plastic everywhere. notsomuch for volvo safety there. actually, i'm pretty sure the 140 series came before volvo gave a shit about saftey.

and the zip ties...
looking for somewhere to put the coils... temporarily evicted the windshield washer tank, stuck 'em there. think they're going to go on the inside of the firewall. think all the wiring is going to go there.

just stoked as hell that it runs.

oh.... and stand back, make way for my mad video skills...

14point7 JAW wideband gave the magic smoke.
now i've got a new toy...
innovate MTX-L
[Image: IMAG0538.jpg]

and dug this out to replace the current 'steering wheel'...
early 70s Donohue RaceMark. it's a little worn, but has some history to it.

hope to get some time tonight to put the new wideband in, and give the current tune a test...
and maybe make a steering wheel hub in the morning...

if the f'er is even half way drivable, i'm driving it to work tomorrow. only 5 miles, but still...
AND... studded snows are legal this time of year! (the only tires i have for it at the moment... Big Grin )

nothing strange... other than venturing more than a few blocks from home Smile

6 mile drive, it did fine. got a little hot near the end, but it doesn't have a fan, doesn't have a radiator shroud...

you got your obligatory mile high msq. it looked like it got a little toasty, but nothing too serious. I was wondering why the temp seemed to keep climbing slowly.

RE: 142... b20, holset, megasquirt (lotsa pics)
yeah, i need to hit up a junk yard... Corrado G60 radiator fan, anyone?

it's fine as long as it keeps moving, but the pesky traffic ruins that. with a shroud and fan it should be fine. i've used Scirocco radiators in front of much larger engines in much warmer climates with fine results.

EDIT:
loaded the new msq from Kenny... drive home was f'ing rad. still stumbles here and there, but not difficult to drive. made a couple almost full throttle runs from ~20mph to 50mph keeping an eye on the O2 and staying far away from redline. 12psi comes on real fast. the car is beginning to be fun again.

not perfect, but i think it's a driver...

day two of commuting with it. last map = good time happy fun. can't wait to try the latest one..

first, the broken ass steering wheel sucked balls, and i have two cuts on my pimpin' hand because of it. so... out comes the sawz-all...

some time with a band saw, flap disc, bench belt sander, files and rollocks, bit o' drill press, some hand tapping... and presto:

that'd be rad... other than the "overheats, no brake lights, no taillights, no signals, no fuel gauge, rattles like a runaway chuck wagon, and it's on studded snow tires" thing...
damn it rattles like a sob... gutted interiors kinda suck ass on the street. a total lack of rubber doesn't help. glass bangin' around and such.

oh, and work, kids, etc Smile

i need to sort out the fan, brake/taillights and such pretty quick. didn't notice until tonight that there was nothing on the exterior but one working headlight Big Grin

one more for fun:

damnit, datalog is goofy. afr has a slight delay from map pressure, so the actual afr at 210kpa looks like it was in the 11's right before you let off.

RE: 142... b20, holset, megasquirt (lotsa pics)
bah... stupid goofy datalog... guess i'll have to do it again Big Grin

i'm making a shroud for the radiator... maybe i can get it to stay at a reasonable temperature. corrado fans sourced for cheap, but they won't be here until next week. i think with just some shrouding and staying out of traffic it'll be good for now.

already can't wait for the next engine... basically the same setup other than B23 M rods, B21 pistons, 8 bolt B20 bottom end, another F head with bigger valves and more porting. have it all sitting here, but other projects in the way.

also gonna try an M45 trans, ghetto mounted at an angle on the B20/M40 bellhousing. the swedes seem to get 'em to last good enough behind ~500hp motors.

when both fans are on high, it pulls a total of 36amps. shitdamn, it moves some serious air.

RE: 142... b20, holset, megasquirt (lotsa pics)
part # says 2000-2005 VW Golf/GTI... VW was cool enough to have only a couple different radiator shapes for decades so this thing fits like most the radiators they've made.

as for the car:

despite a transmission graced with the torque capacity of a pair of chinese knock off vice grips, a clutch apparently made of paper mache and my heavy foot... it's doing well. the car rips.

i wholeheartedly recommend Kenny's MS tuning. in short order this car went from a series of headaches and a barely drivable map to something that cold & hot starts better than D-Jet ever did even when new (and as well as my OBD-1 suburban)... roll-on acceleration is strong to say the least... and it just plain drives *well*... gets better with each .msq.

can't wait for summer, dry weather, drag radials and some time at PIR. i'll need to sort the trans/clutch before then; one launch would probably leave bits o' trans scattered about the first 60 feet of track and have a pissed off cleanup dude after me...

RE: 142... b20, holset, megasquirt (lotsa pics)
as an update...

drivability is awesome. cold & hot starts are perfect. acceleration is good enough to have already wasted a clutch.

it was a clutchnet organic & one of their painted pressure plates. tossed both, swapped back to a new OEM organic and the original pressure plate. i swear it works better.
too bad the roads are slippery and wet... no traction in any gear above ~10psi. it's fun, though Smile

RE: 142... b20, holset, megasquirt (lotsa pics)
boost control.
can't get the Holset's factory boost control solenoid to work with any reliability or regularity with MS... plus it was feeding back +v through the ground.
i put a manual boost controller on, and hot damn full boost comes in a lot faster. looks like the wastegate began opening around 14psi, with the holset solenoid.

back to electronic control, we go out with the old, in with the new...
kinda like the one diyautotune sells.

still haven't gotten it to work with MS, but i'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with MS this time.

also running an electric fan, controlled by MS. gotta say, that was quick/easy. FIDLE controls the relay, turn the fan on at 190, back off at 185. i can beat the hell out of the car and not getting the temp over 195f anymore.
